Thwarted by an anti-child feature, and how this happens a lot more than we think

The packaging had said, “Child Resistant” along with a scissors sign.
But I managed to detach the plastic casing from the cardboard.
Oh? So easy? And I chuckled, how is this "child resistant"…? 😆
So I popped the battery out of the plastic casing. Cannot.
I turned it upside down to drop it out. Cannot.
Shake it. Cannot. Snap it. Cannot. Flip it. Cannot.
Then I looked closer. Oh, it is plastic shrink-wrapped. Must use scissors to cut.
Har!! So it is QUITE child-resistant after all, including this “child” 😅
----------------
It’s a silly story, but it’s one that happens often enough.
- I teach adult learners, sometimes quite advanced ones. I teach them a concept. They think they have seen it before, so they switch off. They think they understand it, but they don’t. And then they make mistakes.
- I work with leaders. I warn them where the potential potholes ahead might be. They think they know the road well. In fact, the more senior they are, the more they think they have travelled this road many times before, and the warning is unnecessary. And then they fall into the potholes.
Sometimes, the problem is not that we don’t know. The problem is we think we know, when we don’t. It’s the illusion of knowledge and experience.
It’s good to be thwarted by an anti-child feature. Humbling, and a good reminder! 😌 🌱
